Erin Nowak

Geographically i am a Grand Rapids native with my heart solidly split between the NE and NW sides of town, having grown up in different ways in both.  After spending some of my formative adult years existing first in the Polish diaspora, and then in the country itself, a good chunk of my heart resides and identifies there as well.

 

Experientially speaking i have been a coach, coxswain, scholar/athlete, cashier, EFL teacher, professor, regional sales director, yoga assistant, independent beauty consultant and stylist, payroll and hr specialist, life coach. (Daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend)  

Yogically speaking, i have enjoyed a solid practice for ten-ish years in many iterations of my body.  My favorite thing about yoga is that it doesn't leave you. I’ve been a clueless beginner, desperately looking around class to do the right things. I’ve been a yoga assistant, trained to see the alignment of others and to help that alignment serve the person and the pose.  I’ve been a (very) pregnant practitioner, working with a body that felt foreign. I’ve done yoga wearing said baby and rediscovering what my body can do. I’ve followed along in class and created my own flows at home. I’ve left yoga by the wayside from time to time. Each time i’ve taken back up it’s greeted me warmly. My body always remembers, and is always capable no matter how the repetitions or modifications change. Yoga is the best reminder i have to love and appreciate my body however it is.

I found my way to yoga through fighting stress and anxiety; my time in the corporate world gave her a perspective on the difficulty of "having it all" INCLUDING sanity.  Training in Simon Sinek's Inspire Like a Leader, and Trauma Sensitive Yoga (200 hr Yoga Alliance certification from the Mindful Vinyasa School of Yoga) opened her eyes to the many other reasons people come to yoga, and that yoga provides something for every BODY (age, shape, and flexibility).  

I was born in Grand Rapids and after moving back with my family after living in Detroit and Chicago, so know first hand that Grand Rapids is an amazing community.
 

I appreciate all students that join the practice as I continue to learn from each and every one of them

I was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan although Grand Rapids has been my home for the past 7 years. Yoga and meditation found me back in 2012 at a time in my life I can only describe as pure uncertainty. Unsure of which way to turn, where to look, or what to do with myself in order to find peace of mind, clarity in this human experience, and get back to my
truest Self.


A shift began to take place within me, and I witnessed this internal shift reflected in all
experiences outside myself. I began to feel lighter, less consumed by worrying thoughts, and increasingly humbled by the mystery of the unknown. Since opening my heart to this practice, it has become a way of life. Yoga and meditation provide me the opportunity to explore my Self with compassion, view my world in a new light, and instill within me deep honor and respect for the nature of all beings.


Through the many transitional and exploratory phases over the last several years, I’ve earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Grand Valley State University in 2016, received
certification as a 200-hour RYT through Roots Yoga in early 2017, became certified in Reiki I and II by Reiki Master Danielle Halk in late 2017, and since have begun training at Beaumont School of Yoga Therapy to continue my journey down the path of holistic healing.

Sarah Andro

I have been practicing yoga for 25+ years with various levels of commitment but ever since i started practicing I've wanted to be a teacher, it just took me a while to nail down my dream. 

I received my 200-hour RYT through Mindful Vinyasa School of Yoga in January 2020.  

My focus in teaching is to try to assist every student to feel comfortable in their bodies and recognizing and appreciating their own magnificence. 

I was Reiki I, II, III (Master) certified in 2012  by Patti Ortyl of Feeling for Healing. 

I am a single mom of two beautiful daughters and an incredible son.

Yoga has been a huge part of my life since college. I became a yoga teacher 10 years ago, and since then have opened and sold a studio, worked for others, and led workshops and retreats. I most recently became a licensed massage therapist, specializing in Thai Massage (think assisted yoga with acupressure!).

The one aspect that ties all these experiences together is connection.

Through yoga and massage, I have connected with many people, created and joined communities and developed lifelong friendships.

This connection with other human beings is what I bring to my yoga teaching and my Thai massage. I am so excited to be able to bring this experience to The Hive, which I co-own with my sister Erin.

In my experience, yoga and Thai massage can help people have a deeper understanding of their body and what they need to feel their best, relax, and heal.

As a yoga teacher, I don’t take myself too seriously. Whether it is a power vinyasa class, a slow flow, or a yin class, expect to have a little fun and go a little deeper to discover new things about your practice.  

I’ve had 120 hours in basic, intermediate and advanced training in Thai Massage from the Thai Institute of Healing Arts. My massage training, coupled with my yoga background helps me assist my clients to deepen their experience through home exercise and restoration.

I live in Grand Rapids with my red lab, Tyson, and like him, I am always moving. We love long walks in nature. In addition to yoga, I am an avid distance runner with a growing interest in mountain biking and hiking.

I know how it feels to push your body, as well as take care of it, in order to get the most from it. I love good food and wine, and have been known to do an occasional yoga pose on top of a mountain or on a wedding dance floor.

I am proud to be a Gazelle Sports Gazelle Activator as well as a Legacy Ambassador for Lululemon. When I am not at The Hive, you can find me at Urban Massage, where I specialize in deep tissue and relaxation massage.

Angela Vargas

Yoga Instructor

I graduated in 2016 from the Mindful Vinyasa School of Yoga right here in West Michigan. My training and certification are in vinyasa yoga, with an additional emphasis on mindfulness and trauma sensitive yoga (TSY). I strongly believe yoga is beneficial for everyone. You don’t need to be fit or flexible to do yoga, you just need to be willing to move your body. Join us for yoga and see where your body can take you.

Matthew Cockrum

My yoga journey began with the unexpected gift of Rolf Gates’ book, “Meditations from the Mat.”  Discovering a system of physical, mental, spiritual and emotional discipline was a gift from the universe! I have studied and practiced in Power Vinyasa and Ashtanga studios and also enjoy exploring restorative and Forrest inspired practices.  I trained in yoga assisting, completed a year-long apprenticeship at an Ashtanga-inspired studio and completed 200 hours of yoga teacher training with Salt Lake Power Yoga.  Join me in the journey towards wholeness that is asana, meditation, inquiry and Life.
